Getting Started As a Systems Administrator

I am Mike Walton and I am here to help you take that step towards a new career or improving your career as a Systems Administrator.  I have been in the IT field since 2001 and I know what makes a good Systems Administrator.  I will teach you what you need to know to be an effective Systems Administrator.

This page is your getting started guide where I will take you through some of the basics to give you a good foundation.

Basics of Windows Operating Systems

Microsoft is the largest name in Operating Systems and most businesses around the world use Microsoft Windows as their Desktop operating system and as their server operating system. To be a good Systems Administrator you need to understand Microsoft Windows inside and out.  In this section of the site I will have information on Microsoft Windows and what you should know.

Networking Basics

In most businesses Networking is not typically part of a System Administrator’s job.  However you should have a good understanding of basic networking.  By doing so you will have a leg up on other job applicants.

Also remember that in many smaller companies with small IT departments that System Administrator may also be the Network Administrator.  So having a good understanding of networking can open up multiple opportunities to you.

Systems Administration

Being a good Systems Administrator is more than just understanding Microsoft Windows.  It is also knowing how to manage and monitor those systems. It is also understanding how to best allocate the resources to have to maximize your infrastructure.

Gaining Experience

You can go through everything I have here but to really land that dream job or even that first job you need to have some real world experience.  There are many ways to get that real world experience, some that you may not have even considered.  Getting this real world experience will show hiring managers that you not only have the knowledge but that you worked hard to get the experience to be a valuable employee.

Land that Job!

Landing that first job can be a difficult endeavor but feels so rewarding once you have done it.  Similar to experience you need to know how to write that amazing resume.  You need to know how to wow any interviewer you meet.
